As I’ve mentioned before, I’m an avid cook, and so are my daughters. To all you budding Julias out there, I highly recommend taking a class to hone your skills. We like Chefs, Inc., a great local culinary school. Chefs, Inc. especially caters to the younger set, offers a kids camp for those children you can’t keep out of the kitchen, and a beginning culinary program just for teens. There’s also a whole variety of classes for adults, from healthy cooking techniques to mastering knife skills. Taboo Holiday Party

We’ll be hosting carolers and Los Banjolinos, a banjo band and serving up red velvet bundt cakes from Kiss My Bundt on Thursday, December 10 from 6-9pm. We’re thrilled to feature two of our favorite authors signing copies of their books: Jim Heimann, Los Angeles: Portrait of a City from 6-7pm, and Alissa Walker, City Walks Architecture: New York from 7-8pm. Remember that all of West 3rd Street will be hopping with sales, food and music during those hours, so be sure to use the complimentary valet parking. One of the most beloved foodies in Los Angeles, chef, cookbook author and KCRW’s Good Food host Evan Kleiman, celebrates 25 years at her fantastic Angeli Caffé this month–my husband Michael actually designed the Angeli logo 25 years ago! To celebrate, Evan’s having several festive events in January. There will be a kid-friendly pizza and pasta party from 12-4pm, then a grand, grownup dinner under the stars starting at 7:30pm. In the meantime, drop in to the restaurant between now and 2010 to congratulate Evan and enjoy three-course dinners for $25. Coming up October 9-11 in San Antonio, Texas, this is the place to learn what a Parisian musette is, and to experience every corner of the accordion world, from Balkan to Basque, Czech polka to Creole zydeco, Americana to Acadiana. Hollywood Bowl

We’re sticking close to home this summer but one of the great things about staying in LA is that I won’t miss any of the great shows at the Hollywood Bowl. Of course I’m excited to see Raphael Saadiq, whose album might be my favorite of the year, and who could forget the return of Grace Jones. But I also love the Bowl because it combines two of my favorite passions: live music and cooking. Half the fun is preparing a delicious picnic for our friends and picking out that oh-so-fabulous bottle of wine. One of my winning picnic recipes is Diane Worthington’s poached salmon with tomato basil vinaigrette, from her classic cookbook The Cuisine of California, published by Chronicle Books.
